Demonstration: Performing with Max

When out-of-the-box software won’t cut it on stage, it’s time to roll your own performance software! Cycling ’74′s Max is a fantastic way to build custom software without having to write hundreds of lines of code. Max is a visual programming environment where you patch together objects to build the software of your dreams.

Ed Guild is a founding member of the live electronic band, Psylab. In Psylab Guild built a MIDI drum sampler in Max because there were no drum samplers on the market that were optimized for live performance. Guild has also collaborated with other local and national musicians building performance systems that push the boundaries of what his collaborators thought possible.

In his presentation Guild will demonstrate some of his work with Max through a live, collaborative performance with another musician. Afterward he will talk about how the patch works and go over the basics of Max.
